Islwyn Ffowc Elis was born in Wrexham in 1924 and raised in Dyffryn Ceiriog. He attended school at Llangollen and then the University College of North Wales. His first novel, Cysgod y Cryman, 1953, is considered to be a watershed in Welsh literature and in 1999 was declared joint Welsh book of the century.
